Regenerating Telkaif
Rebuilding structurally safe buildings across the Nineveh Plains is vital work. So we were delighted to support three engineers in establishing their business to rebuild homes, schools, businesses and to win local building contracts. We wish to thank the Highway One Trust for funding this project with Mosaic Middle East. We also wish to thank our implementing partners Friends of Youth Forum.

During the ISIS invasion and occupation in 2014 the Nineveh Plains became a series of ghost towns with homes, schools, churches and buildings damaged or destroyed and the Christian and Yazidi population fled for safety. For the Christians who have been brave enough to return, it is an uphill struggle to rebuild their villages one building, one business at a time. It is slow work with residents having to travel to Mosul for technical advice, or more commonly, to build homes and infrastructure with no professional input.
Now ten years on and thanks to a recent grant from the Highway One Trust, Mosaic has been able to start-up an engineering business in the village Teleskof in the district of Telkaif to accelerate the rebuilding. The engineering business aims to focus on the needs of the local population, with a view to repopulating and rejuvenating the region. Already the team have successfully provided technical support to improve the sanitary system at a local school. This project exemplifies the broader impact of the engineering office, fostering safer and more resilient infrastructure across Telekaif. They in turn can create work for local tradesmen therefore creating more local wealth, skills and sustainability.
The Project

An Engineering business has been established. It will provide stable employment for three engineers, plus there is work for a young female graduate engineer too.

Their income will enable them to provide for their families.

They are equipped to initiate rebuilding projects and to win local government contracts.

These rebuilding projects will provide employment for other trades, such as builders, plumbers, tilers, electricians, plasterers, decorators, etc.

Rebuilt shops, homes and businesses will provide a visual sign that the village is on the ‘up’. This will attract other Iraqis to return and to start-up their businesses and increase job opportunities.

Goals
  • To create 3 new job opportunities, but instead 4 were created
  • To rebuild homes, schools, businesses and communal buildings
  • To attract more families and businesses to return
  • To ensure buildings are structurally sound and that new ones are built to a safe standard.
  • To offer signs of improvement and investment that encourage people to stay in the Nineveh Plain
