Traditional Tahini Production Returns to the Nineveh Plain

Nineveh SEED
The revival of traditional products brings new life
A tahini factory has opened in the Christian town of Bartella, through the Nineveh SEED programme. Read on and join us in the celebrations!
Funded by Mosaic Middle East and The Highway One Trust, in partnership with local NGO, Friends of Youth Forum, production of a traditional food has been revived and livelihoods restored.
Factory Owners
The opening of this Tahini factory means that locals no longer need to rely on expensive imports for this staple product.

Many towns on the Nineveh Plain in northern Iraq were once known for their factories. Olive oil, pickles, and tahini (a Middle Eastern sesame paste that makes Hummus taste amazing) were all produced in great quantities.

In the town of Bartella, just 21km east of Mosul, tahini is one of the main food products, with recipes passed down from generation to generation.

When ISIS controlled the region, they burned and looted the factory, equipment and machines. ISIS targeted Christians and the Kurds, killing and kidnapping, and destroying property.

Those able to return have struggled to start again. With no government assistance and without the financial means to rebuild factories, businesses and farms, the future has looked uncertain.

Through our Nineveh SEED programme, we are bringing hope for a better future – a future where the people of the Nineveh Plain are empowered and equipped to thrive rather than merely survive. Rebuilding this derelict Tahini factory provides more than jobs - it brings hope and restores dignity. It encourages the people of the Nineveh Plain to remain in their homeland and gives those that have fled, the belief that one day they can return home.

The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.

Over the next 12 months you can be a part of our vision for a better future for hundreds of families. Our aim is to complete a further 8-12 Nineveh SEED projects in 2022 impacting over 100 families and as many as 500 children.

We ask you to please join us in supporting our joyful vision through prayer and donations if you are able. We also welcome funding from businesses, Trusts and Foundations, so if you know of any that may be able to help support this work, please get in touch with us.
