More than a Game
Iraq is back at the World Cup. For young people in northern Iraq, football means even more.
For the first time in 40 years, Iraq is back at the World Cup.
Across the country and across the Iraqi diaspora, people are celebrating a long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage. It is a moment of pride, joy and national hope.
At Mosaic, we are cheering Iraq on.
But for the young people we support in northern Iraq, football has always been more than a game.
It is a safe place to gather.
A reason to keep going.
A team to belong to.
A coach who knows your name.
A future that feels possible again.
That is why Mosaic is launching our More Than a Game appeal, to help continue our football project for young people affected by conflict and displacement in northern Iraq.
A generation shaped by conflict
Many young people in northern Iraq have grown up in the shadow of conflict, displacement and uncertainty.
Some were forced to leave their homes. Some spent years in camps. Some have returned to communities still recovering from violence, loss and instability. For many, childhood and adolescence have been shaped not by safety and opportunity, but by trauma, disruption and waiting.
In this context, football can become something deeply powerful.
A football pitch may look simple. A ball, two goals, a group of young people running together.
But for children and teenagers who have lived through conflict, that pitch can become a place of healing. It can provide rhythm, routine, friendship and encouragement. It can help young people rebuild confidence, learn teamwork, express emotion, and experience joy again.
Through Mosaic’s football project in northern Iraq, young people are given regular coaching, positive role models and a safe environment where they can play, belong and grow.
Football that builds confidence, resilience and hope
Mosaic’s football project began with young people who had been displaced by conflict. What started as a simple opportunity to play has grown into a long-term programme of support, encouragement and community.
The project now provides regular sessions for young people in northern Iraq, led by trusted local coaches who understand the needs of their communities.
Through football, young people learn far more than sporting skills.
They learn how to be part of a team.
They learn discipline and commitment.
They build friendships across difference.
They gain confidence in their own abilities.
They experience the stability of regular support.
They discover that they are valued, capable and not forgotten.
For many, the project is one of the few safe and positive spaces available to them.
In a place where young people have known so much uncertainty, football offers something steady. In communities still rebuilding after conflict, it offers connection. In lives marked by trauma, it offers joy.
This is why football is more than a game.
Faith. Football. Future.
Mosaic’s work is rooted in the belief that every person is made with dignity and purpose, and that long-term peace is built through local communities, relationships and hope.
Football is one way that hope takes practical shape.
It gives young people a safe space where they can be children and teenagers again. It helps them develop confidence and resilience. It brings people together. It creates opportunities for mentoring, encouragement and belonging.
As Iraq returns to the World Cup for the first time in 40 years, we want to celebrate the power of football not only on the world stage, but in the everyday lives of young people in northern Iraq.
For them, football is faith in action.
Football is friendship.
Football is recovery.
Football is future.
